Altra IQ, Now Were Getting Somewhere!

Everything is trying to connect your life and what you do. Nike tried this 10+ years ago, now Altra Running is integrating the electronics into the shoe itself. The price itself is a bit steep, but if you carry your phone and want to analyze every step you take this is the shoe to wear.

Impact Rate:
The Altra IQ's dual shoe sensors allow you to monitor how hard you hit the ground with each step. The app provides a view of your overall impact rate as well as your left to right balance, providing you with the live data and coaching tips that you need to react mid run, and ultimately helping you to become a lighter, more efficient, and balanced runner.

Cadence:
Cadence is the live "pulse" of your run and a key factor in your form, foot strike, and efficiency. Our live cadence tracking and timely coaching tips will help you keep your turnover at the appropriate rate for your current running pace, helping you become a more fluid running machine.

Ground Contact Time:
Ground Contact Time (GCT) is the amount of time each individual foot spends on the ground during your stride. GCT is a great informational metric to use in coordination with cadence and impact force/balance, helping you find the best stride for your body geometry.

Live Coaching:

  • Virtually undetectable, razor-thin sensors are embedded in each of the shoe’s midsoles
  • Live run-data is sent from the quad accelerometers to the Altra IQ App to be analyzed
  • Just like a coach, the IQ experience monitors your movements and provides real-time coaching and feedback to improve and streamline your running technique.

This of course is just an app, now pair with shoes and BAM you have all the features live, however you must run with your phone.
Altra Running
"We've taken the Torin, our best-selling road shoe, and added IQ technology to provide you with live feedback on foot strike, cadence, impact rate and contact time. The Torin IQ's razor-thin footbed sensors provide onboard coaching to help you improve your technique and form on-the-run. The updated reflective upper and asymmetrical lacing allow you to enjoy your run in comfort and safety. This neutral workhorse has a 28 mm stack height and a smooth, forgiving, plush ride thanks to the responsive A-Bound™ compound in the midsole. Let your foot biomechanics work freely with the combination of the toe-wiggling FootShape™ toe box and the natural foot positioning allowed by the fully cushioned ZeroDrop™ platform."

At $220, you have to be serious.

Father's Day, Gifts!

Every year, new stuff comes out, this never changes. Technology get faster, more expensive, gear gets lighter, and more colorful.

Gear Patrol does a great job at finding all these. For Fathers day, they put a list together that is quite reasonable.

Ibex Pulse Short
For $68 this is a great deal and a piece of equipment that will last well beyond the sneakers he got last week. They have a merino wool liner that is bacteria resistant, breathable and moisture wicking.

Redshift Sports, Game Changer! One Bike, Two Options. Tri/Road

This is amazing, one bike, two options. Tri bike then a road. All of us have had two bike and train on the road bike and race on the tri bike. Now you can do both.
Redshift Sports was founded in 2013 with the goal of making components that help cyclists and triathletes go faster on the bikes they already own.  We are a small group of mechanical engineers who happen to be avid (if somewhat average) cyclists and triathletes.
Prior to founding Redshift Sports, Stephen, Erik, and Scott managed (and still manage) Ripple Design LLC, an engineering consulting and product design firm in Philadelphia.  We work on a wide range of products, from medical devices to large-scale landmine clearance equipment.  We drew on this extensive design, prototyping and manufacturing experience to bring the Switch Aero System to market.

Demons Need To Be Conquered!

Over a cup of coffee in the USFS building at Hermit Lake, the soon-to-be founding fathers of the Friends of Tuckerman Ravine, Al Risch and Brad Ray, were discussing government budget cuts and the potential devastating results these cutbacks would have on the maintenance and stewardship of the fragile Tuckerman Ravine region.
Brad mentioned that similar Friends groups had started up in other parts of the country and wondered whether we could find someone in the Mount Washington Valley to start a local group whose mission would be to solicit private sector funding and raise an awareness about the struggle to keep and maintain a program of stewardship over the Tuckerman Ravine area.

CES Is Here, Casio Show's New Watch!

Coming from Engadget!
Casio's second watch doesn't look much different than the outdoor smartwatch it revealed at last year's CES. However, the software brains inside the ruggedized timepiece have been given a strong nudge forward. This is one of the first Android Wear 2.0 devices to surface, over half a year since we first got to play with Google's retooled wearable OS. The watch -- designed for outdoors types -- also comes equipped with low-power GPS and color maps that can be downloaded offline for true outdoorsmen and women. You will survive.
Yep, as we said earlier, the design is very similar to the original. Casio has, however, added button guards and a new protective bezel -- important when your outdoors watch costs a few hundred dollars. For usability while wrestling bears or kayaking for your life, the buttons are now different sizes to help differentiate while using it.
App-wise, Casio has further developed the things its Pro-Trek watch does best, with fishing, hiking and cycling features all well represented.

We are passionate photographers, travelers, commuters, creators, and explorers, and we needed a pack that could keep up with our adventurous lifestyle. But we also wanted it to look incredible, and the perfect combination of style and function wasn't out there, so we decided to make it.

When we set out, our goal wasn't just to create a great travel and camera bag. We wanted to encourage others to stop focusing on the monotony of daily life and to really live.

Sometimes a better mousetrap come along, with bike transportation, this happens every year or so. Everyone trying to make it easier, quicker and the ability to handle multiple bikes. I love roof mounted bike racks, they have their downfalls, mostly, garages. UpSide seems to have something pretty good. If you already have a factory roof rack or aftermarket, you do all the work on the ground, lift it up and twist to secure it to your car.

Simple!

Crazy Fast Tri Bike,

Crazy fast, Crazy fast, The Andean Project had one goal: to produce the best triathlon bike possible. A collaboration between Diamondback, KQ Studios, and unjaded aerodynamicists from outside the cycling industry, this bike achieves its singular purpose.

The Aero Core is the heart of Andean, and reflects our integrated design approach. This bike was designed from the center of the wheels—the least aerodynamic area—in towards the middle of the frame, then up. The Aero Core is the result: one large airfoil, it begins with the front wheel, transitions over the bottom bracket and exits off the rear wheel. Laminar flow across the entire system is improved, dramatically reducing drag at every yaw angle.

This is going to change everything, with thinking like this and everyone wanting to go faster, the ICU will have to make the change to the rules.

How To Swing A Kettlebell, Correctly!

Gear Patrol, nails this:
Exercising with kettlebells has a whole range of benefits, from building strength to burning fat, not to mention reducing the chance of injuring your lower back. But since just picking up a pencil awkwardly can blow out your back, we asked StrongFirst COO and certified kettlebell instructor Craig Marker about proper basic form. “The kettlebell swing is one of my go-to exercises for beginner to advanced athletes. It’s much simpler to teach than Olympic barbell movements, and it provides overlapping benefits like strength, speed, and explosiveness.” But that’s if you do it right. So make sure you know the basic movements before you go swinging heavy ass kettlebells in front of your gym’s floor-to-ceiling mirrors.
Hinge, don’t squat. Properly swinging a kettlebell is less of a squatting movement and more of bend at the hips. More accurately, the hips go back and the knees only bend slightly. “Think about this position as a jump. If you try to jump forward as far as possible, the bottom position is the same position that you use at the bottom of the kettlebell swing.”
Explode with your hips, not your arms. “If you think of a bullet being fired out of agun, it receives all of its power initially and then relies on momentum to get to its destination.” The same goes for a kettlebell swing. All the power in getting the kettlebell up in the air comes from the hips. Your arms are just along for the ride.

Your arms aren’t completely useless. Keep your elbows locked and your shoulders back. As the kettlebell arcs upward your lats are engaged, keeping your upper back tight, which Marker says “provides more protection to your lower back during the swing.” And don’t worry about how high the kettlebell peaks. It’s supposed to float up once your hips are in their forward-most position and you’re standing up straight.
Now for the downswing. “It’s like playing chicken with your crotch. You have to wait until the last second to hinge your hips and let the kettlebell pass between your upper thighs.” If your forearms are hitting your lower thighs, you lower back is doing too much work. Now that you’re at the starting position again, do it all over.
Final tip. Use the right weight. If you’re proficient with your swing, a heavier weight will build more explosive power. But adjust the weight according to your experience and proficiency. The key is to be explosive, so don’t jump up in weight too fast, too soon.
