2013 Outdoor Must Haves!

Coffee is definitely a luxury at the campsite, but nothing will put more pep in your step than a tin cup full of java before you hit the trail. For the longest time, this meant packing along a sandwich baggy full of grounds and a couple filters and brewing it like a hobo, but this nifty little gizmo from Handpresso changes all that. Using a pre-pressed coffee packets and a hand pump to get the right water pressure, the Wild Hybrid is undoubtedly the most portable espresso machine we’ve ever encountered
.

There’s something to be said for completely unplugging every so often, and even though high-tech gizmos definitely aren’t necessary for getting out and enjoying nature, we here at DT we know from experience that the right assortment of tech gear can make outdoor excursions simpler, safer, and more fun. These days more and more companies are making gear that’s designed to withstand the elements, so we’ve rounded up our favorites and put together this definitive guide to the best summer outdoor gear.

Ringtool at werd.com

Ringtool is designed to provide maximum functionality with minimal form. It's manufactured in the same hardened and tempered stainless steel Leatherman uses on its multitools so is durable and strong enough to last several lifetimes despite being virtually weightless. It can be kept on a keyring for bike adjustments, assembling furniture, adjusting snowboard bindings, opening that ritual end-of-the-day-beer, and other miscellaneous daily needs. It’s easy to use too, much like the turning of a door key, between the thumb and bent forefinger. To be clear, this tool is not meant to replace more serious tools but rather to be readily available in the case of emergency or spontaneous need.
I am an industrial designer with several years of industry experience bringing good ideas to life. I’ve worked alongside manufacturers and engineers to take countless products to market, from with conceptual sketches to production part. In addition to experiences of my own long-distance bike touring and cycling within the city, Ringtool was the product of countless conversations and testing with cyclists, mechanics, architects, designers, and material experts. I have quotes from two foundries located in here in northeastern USA for both tooling and prices per part so all I need now is your help with the funding to be able to pull the trigger for the first batch.
If this campaign is a success and you receive the tool I would love to hear your feedback and will try my best to incorporate any changes you think might make the product even better in the next version. I am deeply appreciative for your considering to support making this long time dream of mine a reality.

Simple Phone Sleeve, RichWorks

These cell phone sleeves are just plain beautiful. So beautiful in fact, it might take you a little longer to answer your phone or respond to that text. But does that really matter when your device travels in this much style? Didn't think so.

From Even Rich, Founder RichWorks
It’s been something of a dream or goal of mine to create and manage my own brand with its own products, to start something and just see what happens without much of a destination. It’s the kind of thing that lingers in the back of your mind for a while and you just let it marinate until you think it's ready. Well some time in the spring of 2013 it felt ready.
I purchased a new phone and obviously wanted to protect it, but I’ve always hated bulky hard cases and those wimpy snap on things that don’t offer any protection. As someone who takes care of my phone, I really didn’t need a bombproof case that turns your phone into the size of an early 90’s cell phone. Being someone who always wants something that no one else has, I figured I could whip something up.
I’ve always been into soft-goods and learned to sew pretty well in college so I took some left over nylon fabric I had and started sewing up some sleeve-like covers. Turns out they came out pretty cool so I ordered some more fabric in a few color ways and kept refining my design. When I presented my cell phone sleeves to friends and family, some of them loved it and just “got it” but others admitted being reluctant to using it because it wasn’t enough protection. A few people said the cell phone sleeve might not work for everyone but the same product intended for tablets and laptops would make a lot of sense. Obviously I expanded the lineup.
I hope to be able to expand the brand with all types of products. I’ve got a lot of diverse passions and different ideas for products that I’d love to be able to make and sell for people. RichWorks isn’t just about selling one type product or good; it’s really just a means to spread my idea’s to whoever cares to listen.

Thanks for checking out RichWorks and I hope you will spread the word about us If you appreciate our products!

Adidas is spring loaded!

From Fast Co.
It wasn’t until James Carnes saw a rough sketch of a strange running shoe--the sole dotted with rounded, angled blades--that he thought the concept would actually work. “We’re taking a rigid and stiff material and making it look soft and elegant,” says Carnes, the head of global design for Adidas. “That’s hard. This was something we always wanted but didn’t think we could get.”

Hands-On With The Omega Seamaster Bullhead (Live Pics Pricing) — HODINKEE - Wristwatch News, Reviews, & Original Stories

If you like watches and you are a Omega enthusiast, the Bullhead is for you.

The late 60s were an exciting time for Omega. The Constellation line was in full stride, the Speedmaster was heading into space, and the Seamaster Bullhead was finding love in a growing sea of sporty chronograph fans. More than 40 years later, the Speedmaster is still on top of its game and the Constellation is… well it's still here (though a far cry from the 561s of the 60s). The Bullhead however, was been but a faint memory, only discussed within the nerdiest of WIS circles (you know who you are). That's about to change though, thanks to a faithful re-issue of the 1969 Bullhead Chronograph unveiled in Basel just a few weeks ago.

Life Triangle – Water Rescue System by Prof. Shi Yuanwu, Hu Sumei & Wu Chongxiang Yanko Design

Industrial designers are great. This concept is great.
Life Triangle is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.

Every so often you see a design and think, wow why has that not been done before. Not sure, but this concept is great. Drop, crawl and wait for chopper to lower safety rig.   Life Triangle is a life raft featuring a multi-directional triangular shape so that it doesn't capsize easily. Apparently the triangular structure prevents the raft from turning over, a fear often associated with smaller rafts. The boat involves automatic inflation and features a movable signal light containing GPS technology.

Citroen DS BiRotor Concept by Jose Eduardo Sanchez Yanko Design

Why do concept cars look so great, then when produced well not so much! Designer: Jose Eduardo Sanchez, has a great concept for the Citroen, Clean Tech! How about this for Triathletes car!
The Citroën DS BiRotor is a hybrid concept that merges aerodynamic coupe styling with 4-door hatchback versatility to form the sportiest Citroën compact yet. It uses the latest in internal combustion and electric power for optimal fuel efficiency and immediate implementation to the current infrastructure. All that squeezed into a superlight carbon and aluminum modular chassis for optimal weight, rigidity and safety.

As for the tires, the Michelin Variable Response is designed to provide both perfect grip and fuel economy. The VR consists primarily of two carbon fiber covers pressed against each other holding the tire in place. The tire is made from a soft colored rubber and black vulcanized harder rubber surrounding it. The wheel features a servo motor that varies the width of the tire depending on weather conditions and driving demands. It works by expanding the rubber and shifting the gaps to direct water more efficiently. When the ground is dry, the tire closes to become flatter, bigger and harder, improving fuel economy .It will also respond to sudden and violent maneuvers in order to increase stability. The carbon covers keep weight low and allow the wheel to have a bigger diameter to cover larger distance with each rotation.

The power train is one-of-a-kind. It features a 600cc Wankel engine that produces 140hp mounted over the rear axle and connected to the rear wheels via CVT transmission. It also features two 30hp electric in-wheel motors at the front to improve performance and fuel economy. These are powered by a bank of supercapacitors that are recharged constantly by the engine. The onboard computer manages the power delivery according to the driver’s demands, being able to function as a fully electric vehicle without the need of batteries or recharging. The typical disadvantage of the Wankel engine, such as lower pressure and oil consumption are rectified by the use of a turbocharger, organic biodegradable oil and hydrogen-on-demand system. The latter uses a water tank and stainless steel plates to generate hydrogen gas and injects it into the engine to improve combustion and lower emissions.

7 Best Dive Watches

You have to love watches, the best is when Timex rates among one of the best. You don't have to have a $5,000 watch to reach the depths, and most of the time they are overrated. Omega Seamaster is one of my favorites. But after a service, it is running fast 1 hour a day fast. never heard of a Timex doing that!

LoopAlien - Rapid Cord Attachment by David — Kickstarter

LoopAlien - Rapid Cord Attachment by David — Kickstarter: LoopAlien - Rapid Cord Attachment
The size is nice, from the initial images it looks larger. This is a must have make cinching up on a line easy and simple.

The LoopAlien is very easy to use as shown in the video and pictures. To adjust, simply release the tension on the cord and reposition. Once the tension is reapplied the LoopAlien will hold fast. This small, efficient design has been tested to well over 100 pounds using a 1.75 mm cord with no slipping. In fact, the more tension you put on the rope, the more the LoopAlien grips it. The LoopAlien works with cords all the way up to paracord size. The 1.75 mm cord is easier to adjust than the larger paracord sized cords.
