MINUS 8, Astro Studio

So we are all looking at movements of watches, hopefully they are swiss. Well The MINUS 8 brand, consisting of products designed in this West Coast culture, is proud of its position on the world stage and takes its name from this international nomenclature. Time is relative. We are only aware of its passing if change occurs. The MINUS 8 watch references our dependence on change through a series of subtle color shifts, each step only visible in the context of the others. This color shift is achieved through the process of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD.) PVD is an industrial coating process which is inherently time dependent. A raw stainless piece is placed in a vacuum chamber where a hard coating accumulates over time. More time in the chamber produces a thicker coating and a more opaque color. A new wave of watch designers are starting to hit the market, using swiss movements, putting more focus on design. They are great, Professional Watches, has a great assortment of new and old watches with great reviews.

If you are new to the scene check out the directory, to see what you have in front of you. Watch collecting is coming back, so get on the wagon before the prices of some of these new watches gets out of reach.

Lum-Tec, The Ultimate Watch!

Watches are becoming a thing of the past, until now, the Lum-Tec LZ2 is one bullet proof watch. Now I am just borrowing it from a friend, would really like Lum-Tec to send me a A2 to demo, sorry buddy I am not returning anytime soon. This watch is great, big, tough, large letters and has MDV Technology;

This is a special 8 layer application of ultra bright glowing superluminova photoluminescent material.
MDV hands and dials are extremely visible in all light conditions.

Let's just say it glows, like a flashlight. Along with the MDV technology the Lum-Tec features are:
  • 316L surgical grade Stainless steel or tungsten carbide.
  • Thick top grade Sapphire crystals.
  • Double sided anti-reflective crystal coating.
  • Top grade straps or bracelets.
  • Hard PVD bead blasted coatings on some models.
  • Large case designs. 38mm-50mm sizes.
  • Exclusivity. All watches are numbered limited editions.
  • 100 meters/330 ft. minimum water resistance minimum.
  • Full feature heavy duty movements.
  • Lifetime battery replacement on quartz models.
  • One year limited warranty.
  • Highest grade packaging and display box set.
  • Designed and tested in the USA

The LZ2 has proven to be a solid watch, from CrossFit workouts, to running in 12 inches of snow, it does what it should tell time, spot on. Along with it being black/blue face depending on the light, big numbers to read at all time in all conditions, date and a band that gives off a leather presence but is actually rubber.

If you need one watch this would be my choice. One and Done. Collectors should all have one in their box.

P.S. Lum-Tec, I would gladly test out the A2, usiskin(at)gmail.com

    Watches, Burn Notice - Chase-Durer

Watches are so simple but elegant. Seeing the show Burn Notice a ex spy that lives in Miami, helps people out, blows things up and never get caught by the police, hey it is hollywood and with hollywood come products that you are cool. Chase-Durer, Special Forces is one of those products.
Formed a decade ago by Hollywood film producers Brandon and Marianne Chase, the company structure was based on the need for realistically-priced, top quality Swiss Watches specifically directed to the needs of professional pilots, both civilian and military. The design process began after months of consultation with all categories of flyers. It was only after this research that the precision timepieces went to the drawing boards, then to prototype testing and finally into production.

The reaction to the CHASE-DURER "look" and to its functionality, ruggedness and dependability was instantly acknowledged by the aviation world. Not only were their most important needs incorporated into the watches, but CHASE-DURER created a pricing structure that raised eyebrows within the industry by eliminating the exorbitant profits demanded by other companies making similar (though not as attractive) timepieces. "prices for top quality Swiss Watches include thousands of dollars of profit on each watch for the manufacturer and this is simply not necessary," said company founder Brandon Chase. "There is no need to go beyond fair pricing for top quality to maintain our company's success and our customers' support," said Chase. Today, thousands of military and commercial pilots in many nations covet their CHASE-DURER Watches. Hundreds of unsolicited rave reviews are on file at the CHASE-DURER offices. Many of them are posted on this website. Repeat buyers are counted in the thousands. Following their success in the aviation world, CHASE-DURER entered into another form of military timepiece, the ultra-rugged SPECIAL FORCES Underwater Demolition Team Chronograph series. Again the company met with officers and enlisted men from Special Forces units and, before long, the unique SF 1000 was born.

Since the creation of its first watches, CHASE-DURER has spread its wings and created an entire collection of quality Swiss watches that enjoy the very special "look" and pricing that continue to be the buzz of the industry. The Collection is the largest Chronograph selection of Military, Special Forces, Pilot, Racing, Diving and Ladies' Sport Watches available. The range is complete, from moderately priced models to diamond and 18K gold models. Scores of different choices have been designed to satisfy the needs of discerning watch buyers in every field of endeavor, offering a wide selection of features within a popular price range.

The CHASE-DURER two-year international incremental warranty is possible only because of the stringent quality control maintained by the Company, and the design and construction elements specifically dedicated to dependability and ruggedness.

Headquartered in Beverly Hills, California, the company is a fast-growing Watch manufacturing/distribution company. CHASE-DURER is proudly displayed in hundreds of retail sites, with the number growing steadily. These fine precision instruments can also be found at the United States Naval Academy, West Point and the Air force Academy. Among the many professionals who wear CHASE-DURER timepieces is world-renowned test pilot Robert Gilliland, who was first to fly the SR-71 Spy Plane, THE BLACKBIRD, and who has flown higher and faster than any pilot in history. Among proud owners are Generals, Admirals, Combat and Commercial Pilots, Fighting Ground troops, Doctors, Lawyers, Industry Leaders and so many others who require and enjoy the unique power, performance and design of true CHASE-DURER Swiss precision.

Tens of millions of television viewers have been introduced to CHASE-DURER on prime time network television programs such as JEOPARDY, HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, WHEEL OF FORTUNE, THE PRICE IS RIGHT, SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP and others. Network television host Pat Sajak owns three CHASE-DURER timepieces. Many film celebrities wear the Watches.

For most of the decade, CHASE-DURER Watches have been exposed to millions of magazine readers in full-page color ads in such major publications as ESQUIRE, DISCOVER, SMITHSONIAN, MAXIM, GQ, PLAYBOY, POPULAR MECHANICS, MEN’S JOURNAL, DUPONT REGISTRY, MILLIONAIRE, and dozens more. The company participates in major Jewelry and Watch trade shows around the world. This exposure assures that the company will continue growing its significant Dealer, Distributor and Customer base. CHASE-DURER is a charter member of the AMERICAN WATCH GUILD and serves on the Advisory Board together with CARTIER, ROLEX, JAEGER LE COULTRE and VACHERON CONSTANTIN.

CHASE-DURER for those who know Watches.

Nixon 51-30 PU CHRONO, ONE BIG, TOUGH Watch

    Suunto Elementum

Wether it is needed or not, when endurance watch companies branch out the outcome is usually good. Suunto has done just that with their Elementum collection. NEW, Forerunner 310XT

Your next favorite watch is coming, second quarter of this year (not sure when that is), the Forerunnner 310XT! Since the watch is not out yet, here is what Garmin is saying...

Finally, a GPS-enabled training device that isn't afraid of the water. The rugged Forerunner 310XT is the triathlete's indispensable training tool — a GPS-enabled, swim-proof trainer that tracks bike and run data and sends it wirelessly to your computer. This multi-sport device has up to 20 hours of battery life, tracks distance, pace and heart rate (optional), and goes from wrist to bike in seconds.

    Time Your Swim

The swim-proof Forerunner 310XT is waterproof to a depth of 50 meters, so you can wear it in the pool or the lake to time your swim. And its slim design and flexible wristband mean Forerunner is easy to wear in any conditions.

    Transition Effortlessly

When you're ready to jump out of the water and onto the bike, Forerunner 310XT moves easily from wrist to bike with the optional quick release and bike mounts, making the transition between sports effortless. Forerunner 310XT categorizes multisport activities in one workout and can also log transition time in the process, so you can analyze your performance from start to finish.

    Collect Workout Data

Forerunner 310XT tracks your position precisely with GPS satellite data and records distance, pace, heart rate (optional), power data (from ANT+™-enabled third-party power meters) and more. High-sensitivity GPS and HotFix™ satellite prediction mean Forerunner acquires satellites quickly and tracks your movement even near tall buildings or under tree cover. And using innovative ANT+™ wireless technology, Forerunner 310XT connects seamlessly to an optional heart rate monitor, foot pod and cadence sensor.

When paired with the optional wireless heart rate monitor, Forerunner 310XT continuously tracks beats per minute and uses heart rate data in advanced calorie computation. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve fitness and monitor your level of exertion.

    Run, Sync, Store and Share

Once you’ve logged the miles, innovative ANT+™ wireless technology automatically transfers data to your computer when Forerunner is in range. No cables, no hookups. The data’s just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through our online community, Garmin Connect or our optional Garmin Training Center™ software. You can even plan workouts on your computer and then send them to your Forerunner.

At a cost of $350, that's not bad..

Innovations by Rossignol :: CHRONO METEO JACKET

When companies push the limit it should make you happy. Rossignol is one of those companies. It seems as though they took a good concept from Swatch, POP Swatch which just had the watch on it, but could be embedded in clothes. So it seems as though Rossignol is trying a similar approach but using high end technology to click in to its jacket.
It's not easy to check your watch when you're on the trail wearing gloves, a fleece, and a protective jacket . Rossignol has found the solution: The Gore Tex® stretch CHRONO METEO jacket with the Pure Mountain Station.
Used alone or slid inside a watertight thermoformed insert worn outside the jacket on the wrist, it combines all the vital features for skiers:
    • Barometer mode providing atmospheric pressure, temperature, and weather forecasts
    • Altimeter mode to display the altitude in real-time, calculate and record your vertical drop, and measure your performance using a computer
    • Digital compass to determine your direction

As the watch is always subject to a fall or extreme conditions, it was designed to be shock proof and weather resistant. The intentionally oversized liquid crystal digits and numbers are easy to read at a glance. It includes a number of other practical features: timer, alarm, etc.
It comes with an accessory kit including leash, desk stand and clip for use in all situations, at home, touring, in the car, in the office, etc. More than just a watch, this is a genuine multi functional screen

    Good Stuff Rossignol

    MARATAC ZULU WATCH BANDS

For those with tiny wrist or don't like the feel of rubber against you skin, then the Maratac "S-Series" Zulu Bands is for you. Now a days watch bands are pretty comfortable and easy to get used too but if you have small wrist the band gets bunched up and is always hanging on something. These can be trimmed since they are nylon and what is nice is they have two rings to hold the strap in place. Another advantage is the band goes through the pin, in case one pin lets go you won't lose your watch like traditional watches. If you are really using your Polar there is a good chance it will get hung up on something pop the pin and by, by $300+ watch, the Zulu watch band is only $17.00.

Apple and Nike+ at it again!

Apple and Nike are at it again, no not getting the iPhone to work with the Nike+ but working with fitness companies to bring an integrated solution to the users. Having a user be able to plug into a treadmill, stair climber, stationary bikes, well you get the picture. Full blown athletes seem to have devices like Polar watches and Garmin's that can read your HR and many other functions. But allowing the user to hook right into the machines is really taking it to the next level and increasing the Apple/Nike+ population. They still have not contacted me regarding Health Currency. Oh well one can only hope.
    Cheers

    Forerunner 405, almost there.

Now Polar has a great bunch of watches and their newest RS800 is not lacking much, since does not have the GPS built in you have to attach somewhere on your body along with the foot pod for running stride and distance. A bit of a pain consider the Forerunner 405 has it built in. Goods and bad to all this technology is that the Forerunner has a built in GPS, but like the Polar you need the foot pod. Mostly for the things mentioned above but if you don't like the weather outside and you want to record your workout, you need the foot pod for the treadmill. Sorry not everything can be in one neat package. Cost is $300 with out the foot pod.
    Here is Garmin's verbiage:

    "Watch Results

Loaded with serious training features, Forerunner 405 continuously monitors your time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when paired with heart rate monitor). Each run is stored in memory so you can review and analyze the data to see how you've improved. You can even download recorded courses to compete against previous workouts or race a Virtual Partner®. Customize Forerunner’s data screens for instant feedback while you train.

    Use with Ease

Sport watch and personal trainer — Forerunner 405 gives you the best of both worlds in a sleek, stylish package. This high performance watch is easy to use and comfortable to wear when not training. Simply tap the touch bezel to change screens without fumbling for a button. Forerunner 405 comes in two color options — black or green — to fit your style.

    Run, Sync, Store and Share

Once you’ve logged the miles, innovative ANT+Sport™ wireless technology automatically transfers data to your computer when the Forerunner is in range. No cables, no hookups. The data’s just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through our online community, Garmin Connect or our optional Garmin Training Center® software. You can wirelessly send workouts from your computer to Forerunner, too.

    Share Wirelessly

With Forerunner 405 you can share your locations, advanced workouts and courses wirelessly with other Forerunner 405 users. Now you can send your favorite workout to your buddy to try, or compete against a friend's recorded course. Sharing data is easy. Just select “transfer” to send your information to nearby units.

    Track Heart Rate

Forerunner 405 is available with or without a heart rate monitor (see the versions tab) to help you make the most out of your training. Versions with a digital heart rate monitor continuously track heart beats per minute. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance on the same run.

    Cross-Train

Take your training inside with the versatile Forerunner 405. Pair it with an optional foot pod to track your speed, distance and running cadence indoors when a GPS signal is unavailable. This new design clips onto your laces for easy removal and automatically turns on when you start moving. You can also add a speed/cadence bike sensor to track the speed and distance of your cycling workouts.

    Lock Onto Satellite Signals

Forerunner 405 sports a unique design that gives the GPS antenna a better view of the sky, so it can get a stronger signal during your run. And its high-sensitivity GPS receiver provides improved tracking under trees and near tall buildings."

Nike and Apple release the Amp+

Post comes from our friends at ThinkTri.com
Well this is pretty cool looking, Nike could have made a bit more fashionable watch but at least the made the watch. The Nike Amp+ Sport Remote Control is a watch and a remote for the Nike+ experience. Hear instant voice feedback of your time, distance, calories and pace when you add the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit and Nike+ Ready shoes or the Shoe Pouch.
Now I am not a fan of the crazy new look but for the individuals that are wearing this at the gym or to do their daily run, Nike has hit the spot. Not being able to use a iPod or MP3 player while in a race, training with one becomes a crutch.
They built the controls right into the front of the watch along with a speaker so if you don't have the headphones you can still hear your results, smart since you don't want your headphones in while running on a crowded street or at night.
Nike and Apple are pushing technology further than most and other companies are just following at this point. The Polar is still the leader in high fitness, but with the middle market still needing a cool watch Nike + Apple are it. If they wanted to take this to the next level (which I am sure they have thought of) is the iPhone, let me have one device to do it all.
    Check it out.
    Nike Amp+
