Tsunami Survival Capsule

The capsules are designed to sit, stocked with provisions, in a backyard, garage or on a flat roof. After a tsunami alert is issued, residents in at-risk areas enter the Survival Capsule, buckle themselves into the seats’ four point harnesses and wait. The pod floats atop the tsunami waves (Sharpe compares the effect to trying to hold a beach ball underwater) and has an optional bottom tether to keep the pod from being swept miles away. The weight of the pod’s water storage tanks keeps the occupants upright and allows ventilation via air vents in the roof, and emergency air tanks provide 60 minutes of oxygen should the capsule become temporarily submerged.

Why a tsunami survival capsule?

Well, we have all seen the tsunami signs at the beach, but what do they really mean? Depending on the location, it means a fast moving wave potentially 100 feet high could be at the beach in less than 15 minutes. Great, so what are your current options? In some locations vertical evacuation structures are available, in other locations you have to evacuate inland and uphill. Keep in mind, the earthquake that created the tsunami potentially destroyed your evacuation road.
A tsunami Survival Capsule provides an alternative to horizontal and vertical evacuation for areas that have limited evacuation warning time and for individuals that are incapable of evacuating themselves.

Who are these guys?

We are aerospace engineers that specialize in making airplanes as light as possible without breaking. If you have ever taken a commercial flight, you have seen our work.
How does that help you in a tsunami?
We teamed up with a world renowned tsunami expert, Dr. Eddie Bernard, who helped us understand what kind of conditions to expect during a tsunami. The results were staggering; tsunamis pack a punch. However, using the same abilities we use to check aircraft structure we designed a Survival Capsule capable of withstanding the punishment. In fact, our two person capsule is so strong you could stack 10 cars on top of it!

The Impact

There are 130 countries around the world affected by these disasters and 7 million exposed in the USA. Currently Japan is forecasting a loss of approximately 300,000 lives if the Nankai Trough creates an 8-9 magnitude, which has a 70% chance of occurring in the next 30 years.
We hope to reduce the future loss of life with our capsules and by educational outreach.

StemLock, Wonderful Low Tech Solution to Bike Theft.

A lot can be said about Kryptonite locks but simple solutions sometimes are the best answer. I am not saying that a  lock does not help but this solution is great, hidden and well prefect.

Stemlock integrates two new functions into the bicycle. On one hand, it simplifies storage and transport. On the other hand, it is a powerful protection against theft. Stemlock is the first lock integrated into a multifunctional stem. Using a simple pressure and a quarter turn to the left or to the right, the handlebar is quickly aligned along with the frame and the wheels. With one turn of a key, the handlebar is disassociated from the fork, making the bike absolutely impossible to be ridden or conducted.

FiveFingers Shoes, YUP, They Will Pay Millions To Those Who Bought Their Shoes!

Well it didn't take as long as I thought, but only after a few short years, Vibram is going to pay millions to those who bought their shoes and thought it would changed their life. Well it did, it messed them up.

I have to say, Newton Running, gives you a tutorial on running in their shoes, how to build up on millage, get used to your shoe. Vibram did no such thing.

Vibram USA, the company that makes FiveFingers running shoes, has agreed to settle a lawsuit that alleged the company made false and unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of its glove-like footwear. According to the court filings, Vibram settled to put the matter to rest and avoid any additional legal expenses. “Vibram expressly denied and continues to deny any wrongdoing alleged in the Actions, and neither admits nor concedes any actual or potential fault, wrongdoing or liability,” read the court brief.
The settlement consists of two kinds of relief. The first is refunds to class members who submit valid and completed claim forms. Vibram will deposit $3.75 million into an escrow account and those funds will be distributed to those valid class members who purchased a pair of Vibram FiveFingers between March 21, 2009 and the date of the first dissemination of summary settlement notice or class notice, whichever is earlier. FiveFingers will award up to a maximum of $94 per pair, though the agreement acknowledges that based on similar settlements it is reasonable for class members to expect to receive between $20 and $50 per pair.

Hearable and the Bragi, The Dash

The Dash has a touch sensitive surface that lets you control either what your smartphone or what the embedded music player does. You can control The Dash with sliding motions and taps. It is easy to do, even while running or biking.
While active noise cancellation is only good at reducing continuous reoccurring sound, noise isolation reduces all sounds. Active noise cancellation is good at reducing noise from the air-con and airplanes. Noise Isolation reduces noise from screaming kids, dogs barking, wife/husband yelling, airplanes, speeding cars, drunken sailors, neighbors playing basketball. Just about everything. Best thing is, that great noise isolation has increased battery time versus active noise cancellation.

Whether they have been listening to my post or not, but FreeWavz, has gotten very close to making one of the best sports headphones out. One thing that is not clear from watching the video, where is the iPhone? Does it need to be with you?

Lets hope that it is phone free. I do wish they would send me one so that I could test it out. Maybe next time.

Dreamscience Propulsion Thrusters, AMAZING!

Being unable to simultaneously control a power-kite and board, I figured a thruster system would be more controllable allowing me to focus my efforts on controlling the board.
The thruster system allows the user, not only to get more air in an extreme sport, but also get more forward speed - I've had to get friends to test this as I haven't got the bottle! And most impressive is uphill skiing and pulling up using reverse thrust to slow down !

The Swiss Army Knife of Jackets!

Seymourpowell has designed a new smart jacket for extreme environments called Life Tech, for outdoor sportswear brand Kolon Sport.

The Challenge
Seymourpowell faced the challenge of designing a jacket for the most extreme environments with functional elements that would be able to save lives in the harshest of conditions.

The Response
The jacket's design and features are directly influenced by extensive research and interviews with extreme survival experts. Seymourpowell worked closely with mountaineers and ski guides, a Professor of human thermodynamics, an ex-UK Special Forces operative and even a Polar Explorer. This research gave invaluable insights that have been used to create genuinely innovative and lifesaving features.

In a sign that the wearable technology revolution is being driven by the fashion industry, the Kolon Sport Life Tech jacket applies relevant wearable technologies designed to save lives in the harshest of conditions and demonstrates the effectiveness of wearable technology in clothing when there is a genuine need for it.

The Response
The various technological details of the design include: a tri-layered system made up of an outer waterproof and windproof, breathable Gore PRO outer shell jacket; a thermal inner layer with a Heatex System (the world's first conductive polymer heating system); and a stretch fabric base layer with electronic device and battery stowage with proximity to core body heat.

Other key technical design features include a wearable wind turbine generator; oversized zip pulls for use with gloves; easy access shoulder and back straps for manhandling a companion in distress; and a wearable first aid and survival kit.

The wind turbine mounted onto the sleeve of the jacket can be angled to generate power throughout the day whilst the wearer is on the move. It can also be removed and attached to the exterior of a tent to continue generating power overnight. The turbine can charge auxiliary devices such as GPS & smartphones for essential navigation and communication. The Heatex System provides up to seven hours of potentially life saving heat up to a temperature of 40-50°C around vital organs.

And Another Wearable Fitness Tracker - Jaybird REIGN

Not much known here, it tracks by your life activity, sleep, and go-zone. It would be great if it vibrated you awake, or you could customize what you wanted it to do. Here is a perfect opportunity to change it up, not follow the dozen or more wearable's that are all doing the same thing, claiming they are better. Don't follow, make an app that has all the functions baked in allowing the user to decide what they want tracked and alerted.
Boy how I would love to work for one of these companies!

Add the fantastic mountain air and there is very little else anyone could wish for…. ...except an extra pair of hands for pulling the children along! Snowmule is a ski innovation for pulling children on those flat areas of snow while keeping your hands free.

EASYBREATH Snorkel

This EASYBREATH snorkel can be taken many different ways, purist will hate it, kids will love it! For surface viewing it looks great and easy of use is wonderful, I wonder what happens when I go down 70 feet. Would love to get one into my hand to try. Brilliant.

The main obstacle to snorkelling is the difficulty in breathing underwater with a snorkel. Indeed, breathing through your mouth is unnatural, and the snorkel mouthpiece is sometimes considered too intrusive, uncomfortable and unhygienic. That's why Tribord invented the Easybreath mask, the first full-face snorkelling mask, for breathing underwater as easily and naturally as you would on land with your nose and mouth. Thanks to its large size, this innovative mask also offers users an unobstructed 180° field of vision, and is prevented from fogging up by a double air-flow system that is identical to the system used in domestic extraction fans.

Oh and the cost is a no brainier, around $60

Why You Need to Be Doing Burpees

Why You Need to Be Doing Burpees

What is the best predictor of when you’ll die? That seems like a hard—not to mention morbid—question, but, incredibly, study after study is showing that simple tests of physical performance are highly predictive of future mortality.
My favorite recent example is a study from Brazil that tracked just over 2,000 subjects age 50 and up. A 10 point score system was developed to assess how easily they could get up off the floor based on a sitting-rising test (SRT):
Lower SRT scores were associated with higher mortality (p<0.001). A continuous trend for longer survival was reflected by multivariate-adjusted (age, sex, body mass index) hazard ratios of 5.44 (95% CI 3.1–9.5), 3.44 (95% CI 2.0–5.9), and 1.84 (95% CI 1.1–3.0) (p<0.001) from lower to higher SRT scores. Each unit increase in SRT score conferred a 21% improvement in survival. Conclusions: Musculoskeletal fitness, as assessed by SRT, was a significant predictor of mortality in 51–80-year-old subjects.
There was a clear relationship between how easy it was for the people to get off the floor and how long they lived.
A little deeper dive into the data shows that about 95 percent of the people who scored well (between eight and 10) survived over 14 years. Only about 60 percent of those who scored poorly (between zero and three) survived for 14 years, and the number of people who scored poorly increased with age.
And that’s not the only test out there that can predict lifespan. There is now evidence that poor grip strength predicts early mortality in young people.

iWatch, Apples Jump Into Wearable Electronics!

Could this be it! We are all wishing for it, I wear a watch everyday, then I switch to my running watch, then if I am working outdoors, to another. One Watch all the time would be great. Have the ability to see who is calling, play a song, messages, calendar items, meetings, well you get the idea. Now this one looks just like the Nike Fuel Band, but you have to start somewhere and with Nike and Apples partnerships in the past, why over think the concept.

"Though tomorrow's Apple event is shrouded by the usual air of mystery, there will almost definitely be news about a new iPad. The future is less certain for iWatchhopefuls, but in the meantime you can check out this incredibly slick-looking faux mockup of an Apple smartwatch by Berlin-based engineer Thomas Bogner, who posted his concept to Dribbble earlier today.
Bogner, a Nike FuelBand owner, calls his mockup "the bastard child of a Fuel Band [sic] and an iPhone."
Though neither Bogner nor his design have anything to do with Apple, his mockup, whose display features both vertical and horizontal scrolling, evokes some of that glossy, sell-worthy sheen Apple would need to pull off to convince as-yet skeptical consumers that smartwatches are the new smartphones." Christopher Ward C11 TITANIUM ELITE CHRONOMETER - LIMITED EDITION

Christopher Ward, Has done it right!
This is the watch, you can have many others but this watch is it! Powerful, strong, elegant, simple, you could keep going.  Try not to be fooled by the $1,030, price tag, this watch is worth much more than that. Save up this will be your go to watch. Omega, has held that honor for years, in my book, but wow you can't deny this watch it's due!

Given that amateur geologist William Gregor discovered titanium in Cornwall in 1791, you might have expected us to have introduced this strong and lustrous metal into our range before now.

However, it was worth the wait. The C11 Elite is a true titan of a diving watch and is guaranteed to win admiration and admiring glances in equal measure.

With the strength of steel, but 45% lighter, combining with remarkable anti-corrosive properties (particularly against sea water), titanium could have been created for use in diving watches. When you add the precision engineering of one of the best and most attractive cases available, incorporating an internal countdown bezel, to the finest Swiss made helium release valve and a design that oozes with stylish authority, you begin to understand why our resident diver, Chris, is drooling over this particular watch.

Only 500 C11s in this colour combination will ever be produced which will make this legend-in-waiting even more desirable if thats possible?

The Brakeboard is a skateboard truck (axle) with a built-in brake system. It allows for powerful and controllable stopping and smooth speed control down steep descents.
Until now, stopping or controlling a skateboard down any hill at speed has been a challenge. Foot braking and power-sliding require a high level of riding skill. With the Brakeboard, all riders can enjoy controlled hill descents, either by maintaining a velocity continuously or simply braking from speed at a hill's end.
The brakes fit any longboard and can retro-fit your existing board. They ride like any normal truck retaining the regular turning abilities. Pushing and sliding are also not affected by the brake. You can even use your existing longboard wheels.
The Brakeboard is an excellent way to introduce yourself to the sport of longboarding and, for the initiated, it adds a further dimension to riding.

Unfold, Add Water, Have Fun! Oru Kayak

What's really to say, folds into a nice, little big, messenger bag. Now I am sure there are limits to where and what you should really go out in, but for the easy going, take a nice paddle up the coast this is perfect. Storage, well fold up stick in a corner of the garage and well, all done.

We’re a new company dedicated to unlocking the wonder and discovery of the great outdoors— even for city dwellers.
At Oru Kayak, we believe that spending time outdoors makes people happier, healthier, and more productive. Our products offer a way to explore and connect with the natural world—even when you live in a city. We hope your Oru Kayak journeys are as fun and fulfilling as ours have been.
Designer and founder Anton Willis grew up in rural Mendocino County, with easy access to rivers, lakes, and the ocean. In 2008, a move into a small San Francisco apartment forced his fiberglass kayak into storage. Inspired by an article on new advances in the art and science of origami, he sketched a few ideas for a folding kayak. Sketches turned into countless paper models, and over 20 full-scale prototypes. After user-testing on dozens of bays, lakes, rivers and oceans, Oru Kayaks are ready to explore the world.

Head Trauma, Reebok Has a Solution! CheckLight

At CES 2013, mc10 and Reebok revealed the Checklight, a product built to help protect athletes who play football, hockey and other impact sports. Today, you can purchase one of your very own in men's, women's or children's sizes for $149.99 from Reebok's website. For your money, you get the sensor strip, a skull cap to keep it snug on your noggin and a micro-USB charger to keep it powered up.
For those who've forgotten, the Checklight's a head impact indicator powered bymc10's flexible electronics technology that gives athletes and medical personnel simple, actionable information about impacts to the wearer's head. It's not a concussion detector, per se, but it does provide information about the location, number and intensity of impacts to your dome -- so it's a valuable tool that can help identify those in danger and keep them out of harm's way. Well worth $150, we'd say.

A ‘SMART’ BALL, Basketball That Is!

94FIFTY FEATURES

  • Instant feedback - shot by shot or every dribble 50 different head-to-head competition choices
  • Skill-based leveling workouts that get more difficult as you improve
  • QuickTrain shot analyzer for shot speed, shot arc, and backspin
  • QuickTrain ball-handling for power dribbling, speed dribbling, and off-hand dribbling
  • Works with Android 4.0 and greater and iOS 5.0.5
  • Stores workout and competition history for up to 4 players for 3 months
  • Indoor/Outdoor synthetic leather cover
  • Wireless recharging and up to 8 hours of battery life Up to 90 ft. range from hand held
  • Men's and women's/youth sizes
Used in conjunction with the four included training apps – including one allowing head-to-head competition against anyone, anywhere also using the technology – 94Fifty provides players instant feedback and hard data, allowing information to be processed in real time, facilitating faster improvement.
The basic philosophy is simple: That which gets measured can be improved, and too many aspects of training in basketball aren’t measured. A coach can call a jump shot “too flat,” lacking the proper arc to go in consistently, but that language is imprecise. Instead, the ball will communicate the exact angle of a shot to a smart phone and tablet. If 45% is what a player needs, he’ll quickly learn what that looks and feels like coming out of his hand.
