Digital Angel: VeriChip implantation Computer Chip

Digital Angel has been FDA approved for implantation. A implantable computer chip which monitors human biometric functions and transmits the data with GPS technology. On the surface it can store medical information, the bigger picture I hope is that I might not have to wear a strap around my chest anymore which monitors my heart, this implatable chip will be able to send data to a watch or computer.

TrioBike

This is a very useful piece of equipment, I have been using the Burley trailer from some time and thought that it was great. Improvements usually come from others leading the way. The TrioBike which attaches to the front of the bike instead of the rear, can be used as a push cart, trailer for food/children, or just a standard bike. I like the way that is attaches to the front opposed to the rear like a trailer, and the kids get an unobstructed view of the journey.

Stress Less, Stress Eraser

We all need it no matter what we think, having a device that I can look at to see my stress level would be great. With the StressEraser, you can calm your mind and relax your body whenever you want, wherever you go, whether you are spending time at home, working on the job, lying in bed, coping with difficult events or flying on a plane, you can take your StressEraser with you. Here is how it works, put your index finger in the sensor clip located on the top of the unit, the StressEraser uses a medical-grade pulse meter to measure your pulse. After that you let the unit do its thing, there is a whole tutorial on calming the mind, relaxing the body. The StressEraser is not a bad idea, people tell me when I gt stressed that a little vien starts to pop out on my head, I guess that is my tell.

LifeStraw is a water purification tool developed by Vestergaard Frandsen. LifeStraw has a life time of 700 litres or up to 1 year. Positive test results have been achieved on tap, turbid and saline water against common waterborne bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, Enterococcus and Staphylococcus.... A mouth full.. Well what this does for $2 dollars yes two dollars it will provide a person with safe drinking water for a year, give or take a month. This incredible and invented for use in third world countries but can you see the possibilities. For those of you considering using LifeStraw for outdoor adventures in the continental United States, beware that the common "beaver fever" (Giardia lamblia infection) is caused by an organism with 5 micron spores, which are resistant to iodine.

ICE--In case of emergency, dial 'ICE

It's time for a public service announcement, if you are into sports and extreme sports you should know this little tidbit that is circulating around the web, the idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency".
In an emergency situation, ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them.

Gmaps Pedometer

I keep saying it but the ideas/technology that keep coming out is incredible. This is a great one using the Gmaps from google. It works better in a city setting than in rural NJ.
What is this?
This is a little hack that uses Google's superb mapping application to help record distances traveled during a running or walking workout.
This is from Suen and Paul (not me) I thought that they should have a plug since they are the ones that made this Gmaps app.
Why?
Join the Fight: I'm raising funds for the American Cancer Society with my entry in the Chicago Marathon. Help me out by making a donation!
Note: This site is free. I added my fundraising link since I knew I would find like-minded folks here, but there's no obligation.

Helmet Cam

Simple and Sweet. This helmet cam from Viosport I spotted about 5 or 6 years ago, and should have gotten it then. The Adventure Cam 3 kit includes.

A great value at $330.00 VioSport

Innovative Personal Altitude Simulator

No tent or chamber needed, this is a pretty cool device and seems as though it could work. Without having to sleeping in a chamber you can see the benifits of hypoxics by watching TV, reading a book, working on the computer by just wearing this device. AltiPower® is an innovative personal altitude simulator. A device that naturally enhances the performance and endurance of athletes, pre-acclimatises people travelling to altitude and improves the health and wellbeing of ordinary people.
How it works:
The air we breath in contains approximately 21% oxygen (by volume).
The air we exhale normally contains ¼ less oxygen compared to that inhaled, as well as moisture and carbon dioxide.

The AltiPower Personal Hypoxicator uses your own natural breathing process to produce reduced oxygen (hypoxic) air. Continuous breathing using AltiPower, with its patented, semi-closed, respiratory circuit, gradually decreases the oxygen content of the breathing air. This replicates the conditions of high altitude and with it, the benefits of alpine-like air. Price $1200

Smart Goggles

Well I was going to write about an idea that I had, goggles that can keep track of your laps, I will include that at the end of this story.

Brilliant, Brilliant designer Katie Williams created a prototype of swim goggles as part of her design degree at Brunel University in West London. Katie like many has spent hours in the water and will always loose count of the laps we are on, for me I always think that I have done more laps than I probably have. Well she got tierd of this and decided to do something about it. Williams' system incorporates an electronic device, which houses a compass, at the back of the headstrap on the goggles. There is also a small button on the side of the goggles, which activates and deactivates the device when pressed. When a swimmer enters the pool, they press the button once, which signals to the compass the direction the swimmer will be traveling. When the swimmer turns, the compass detects that the co-ordinates have changed and registers the time. The information, including the total time spent swimming, the number of laps completed and the speed traveled are shown in a tiny heads-up display inside the goggle lens, using a system that reflects information off tiny mirrors.

My idea is a little different:
Technology hasn't always help improve what we do, if any one is interested in helping me develop my ideas you can contact me at tubaduba@healthcurrency.com attention Aaron Usiskin, we have SwiMP3 by Finis players that can work underwater for listening while you swim, great not useful to me but a good idea at $200+ dollars. What I would like to see "literally" is Speedo, or any other company to develop a device to count my flip turns. Lets call my device LapCounter(tm), attach a device to my foot (the pad of the foot) and within the goggles you could have a little display that can tell me after a flip turn when my foot pushes off the wall, what lap I am on. I think this is simple use an RFID device (pressure pad) attached to the ball of the foot, and inside or attached to the goggles can be a display that shows what lap you are on.

It can be just like the SwiMP3, the device attached to the back of the strap, placed on the back of the skull. This limits drag and then a wire lead to the goggles will show you what lap you are on using e-paper technology (maybe). Using existing technology electronic paper-based system, several manufactures are hot on this Citizen, Seiko and Hitachi to name a few," American shopkeepers may want to take a cue from Japan, where retailers are testing an electronic paper-based system that lets them change posted prices based on data fed to the shelves from a central server. The displays were created by tire company Bridgestone, and use a substance they call Electro Liquid Powder, which Bridgestone claims is brighter and more easily viewable than comparable LCD displays."

Pad Learns About Your feet

Well we have LLBean that will take a outline of your foot to make sure the shoe fits. Now Yves Behar designed a shoe or pad that you wear around the house or walk down the street and it collects the data, thenyou take the chip out dowload the data and create your own very own shoes. A new pair of shoes in another color, form or material and ergonomically customized using your data gathered while on your walk. This is still in production but look to Nike or a large shoe company to buy this up. Imagine that in a couple of years that you go to a shoe store wear a pair of slippers around the store, they have a device that you can download the information too, from there it is uploaded to Nikes development center, you build your shoe and within a week, personalizedd shoes.

Polar USB IR Interface Kit

This is a great little device for people with/WO the IRDA on your computer. Now must of us have laptops I am assuming, my dell has the port built in but not activated and there are a dozen of sites that tell you have to activate the IRDA, but for $40 why bother. Once I got it installed and followed the instructions to a tee, the little device works like a charm. A problem that I encounter is that if I unplug it before I shut down I get a blue screen so be careful and enjoy.

NY Triathlon and Accenture

Well, after months of waiting and having them say that the event was closed I was registered in the NYC Triathlon, that was the good news, the bad news was the plans that I made could not be broken so I must wait till next year, I keep telling myself that I will be better prepared. Oh well, the other good news is that Accenture has some cool technology that can track the athlete via cell phone or website, very much like the sailing post that I added earlier. These are some things that the tracking will include.

On July 10th, 2005 take part in the excitement and see how your athlete is performing during the Ford New York City Triathlon!

The athlete tracking capabilities will include:

Finish Line Video - for the first time ever you can view a live stream of the finish line during the race. Once the race is completed you will also be able to see a 30 second video clip of your athlete crossing the finish line!

Interactive Map - during the race you will be able to view your athlete's split times and his/her progress on an interactive map.

Athlete Statistics - once the results are in, you will be able to see your athlete's statistics such as placings and average speed.

You can track up to three athletes. The technology is getting better and better to be able to launch my next IDEA, any Venture firms that are interested you can contact me through this site.

To all the Triathletes participating in the event good luck.

Earth Browser (Google)

This program in totally addicting, earth.google.com . I thought it was just me being a Geek, but I showed my buddy who does a lot of Enduro racing and he could not be pulled away from the computer. You are amazed by first the detail that you can see house, roads, mountains, etc.. After you find your house and your friends and family you start to really notice the features that it has and can be download to you computer. GPS, Elevation, distance, locations and these are the ones that I find useful. There is city and state boundaries, gas stations, directions, water ways, you will find yourself spending hours with the FREE version and for $20+ you can get a more advanced version. I could keep going and for the ones that are saying what does this have to do with Fitness technology, imagine printing out your whole routes and marking then up keeping a binder and referencing them. Yea this is cool.

Right now I have to attach it to the triangle part of the frame and can't use it with a suspension bike, till now The Burley Alternative Hitch---Hook Up with Virtually Any Bike, this is gong to be great. It won't damage your frame, so why wait get out and enjoy.

Mavic

I have full Mavic wheels on my Specialized S-Works Pro Hardtail, I upgraded to Mavic Rims and Hubs and the bike is screaming fast and light. The rims have some flex to them, but overall I am very pleased. Now I have not tired to use this digital wireless transmitter, but I have the bike shop looking to hook me up. With the interface and easy of use what more could you ask for from a company that produces nothing but quality products. Using an exclusive Mavic® coded digital transmission technology, Win-Tech® is lightweight and easy to use. It can be fitted to any bike and receive up to 9 stats. No cables, no interference, just a clean bike with completely integrated elements.

Free your Feet

At first I though hey this is such hype, but leave it to Nike to spend millions on developing a sneaker that make it feel as though you are running bare foot. Nike sponsor many college and while visiting, they notice they were training in their shoes but racing bare foot, this got Nike to thinking and BLAM, Nike Free. Now I have not tried the shoes but I will, after reading a great article in the NY Times this morning about running bare foot. "The idea for the Free was born after two Nike researchers, visiting the Stanford track team, found that their sponsored runners ran sprints barefoot. Vin Lananna, their coach, had encouraged them to take off their shoes. "I felt that as shoes became more elaborate and intricate, the feet were getting weaker," said Mr. Lananna, who is now director of athletics at Oberlin College in Ohio. Mr. Lananna had always outfitted his team in Nike's cheapest and least structured shoe. The one time he experimented with Nike's best, his team was plagued by plantar fasciitis and Achilles problems. He now likes his runners to use the Frees."

KEEN

Started selling shoes in the summer/fall of 2004, and that's when I bought mine and have been so happy that in the winter of 2005 I bought a pair of their shoes, I am hooked, hype or not. If you live on a desert island and have not heard of KEEN Footwear these are the fastest selling shoes, in 2004 KEEN sold $30 million worth of shoes around 700,000 pairs. To make you think a little Teva three years to reach $1 million in sales. For sailing or water sports are were these shoes shine, the new docksiders. Jim Van Dine owner and visionary to keep it simple and make changes on the fly by using freelance talent. A big toe protector and boat soles, these grip. What I like about this company is that they have done no advertising. Started all by blogs!! The power of the internet community is unbelievable.

The Incredible Egg

A little restraint goes a long way, so it would seem. For those who have no self control or a family that is way to crazy, here is the solution. I was reading the NYTimes this morning, and in the new reduced circuits section was an article about this egg that helps control how fast you eat, the slower you eat and your mind has an opportunity to adjust and say "hey I'm full". It was also being used to help control your family and have a peaceful meal together, like in the old days. Give me a break, how about a little control over yourself and family, my god pull yourself together.

BodyPad

This seems to be gaining steam just over the last couple of months, or maybe since I have started this blog I have noticed more technology that can help with fitness and even training. I am looking at these devices for training and then fitness. The BodyPad device uses four pressure-sensitive sensors, two on the biceps and two on the knees, along with a wireless radio belt. It works with PS2 and most fighting games. There is not much written on their site that describes how it works but it is pretty self explanatory. BodyPad

Watch that Monitors

Here is another example of how technology is helping improve peoples lives. The next couple of years we are going to see numerous device that can monitor many body functions that right now we need to go see a doctor or prick our finger to get the results.
"A wrist-watch-like Glucoband, with fully integrated LCD screen, electronic circuits, integrated electrodes, battery and adjustable wrist-band, is placed on the person's wrist. The initial measurement process takes only a few minutes, however, in the monitoring mode, measurements can be continuous and only the frequency of measurements must be determined. The Glucoband targets diabetics who are measuring their own blood glucose, and medical personnel who are using blood glucose measuring and monitoring devices in clinics, hospitals and other point-of-care facilities. The measurements meet FDA requirements for accuracy and correlation."

Design Footwear (anyone)

Well the biggest shoe company has done another first, you can pick equipment, footwear and something they are calling collections and actually design your own look (color mostly).
"NIKEiD.com, a site which allows users to individually design their own Nike products, recently relaunched version 2.5. The new NIKE iD site offers an expanded lineup of customizable gear, including Nike Free, plus several active life products like the Dunk, Rift, Presto, and FC. Additionally, the site is opening up to a wider global audience. Version 2.5 now serves both the U.S. and European markets, with more countries scheduled to be added soon."
It is pretty cool and as far as I can tell there is no price difference. Imagine your whole soccer, basketball, football, track can have the same shoe, that used to be only for select colleges and pro athletes. They are a company that I feel used to have great running (that's how they started, remember waffle tread, Yellow sneakers), their running shoes have changes some would say for the better, one thing is for sure they have the money to put towards technology and coming up with innovative ideas. Hey they even sponsor one of the most recognizable athletes of all time LANCE.

Watches that Work

I am a bit of a watch nut, I like all kinds fancy, low tech and ones full of technology. For running, biking and xterra type events, nothing comes close to Polar. I have tried the Suunto X6HR and returned it 4 times within the year. Suunto claimed to have had a bug in a certain batch but I could not handle loosing data and the watch always resetting itself. The best thing about it was the interface with the PC, transfering data was easy and quick, now on the Polar this is one of my biggest complaints, the IrDA should work a little better, but after a couple of tries it hooks up. I use the Polar AXN700™ and this thing is bullet proof, if you are looking for a watch that can handle 90% of what the general public will put it through this is the one, it also competes with Suunto X6HR. It has vertical speed, barometer, fit test, compass and heart rate test. I could go into more but Polar AXN700™ will describe it better and in more detail. The other one, Polar S625X™ Running Computer is great!! Hands down great for triathlons. I have not gotten the bike mount yet but the foot pod once calculated is dead on. Has the same features as the AXN700™, but a different configuration in the setup and file structure.

Body Pod

Just like a dunk take for measuring body fat, this one is affordable for colleges and health clubs. If someone has used this or know of a place I would love to try it out.
The BOD POD offers:
• Proven accuracy using whole-body density measurement.
• Fast test time - about 5 minutes.
• Ability to accommodate all types of populations (including children, the elderly, and the disabled).
• Excellent repeatability. Safe for repeated testing and is non-invasive.
• Ease of use for both subject and operator. No special technician license required.

Walking at Work

Well someone has done it, you can now walk on a treadmill and surf the web, answer email and talk on the phone. The treadmill moves fast enough to raise your heart rate but not sweat. This could be my office tomorrow, "Instead of being sedentary in front of their computers, they'd stand. But instead of standing still, they'd walk on a treadmill. And instead of meeting around a conference table, they'd talk business while walking laps on a track.

That's exactly how Levine, a Mayo Clinic obesity researcher, and several of his colleagues have been working for the past five weeks or so.

"I hate going to the gym, which may be partly why I'm so interested in this," he said, keeping up a 1 mph pace on his treadmill while checking e-mail and fielding questions from a reporter.
USA Today

Wrist Action

Not what you are thinking, but this low tech forearm/grip strengthen device is much better then the old squeeze grip spring device. The Dynaflex Pro Plus is a carpal tunnel saver and helps when you are board watching TV. Doing it in the office is a bit much, but holding on for 10 minutes is quite difficult. I have an original (the one without the rubber around it) and also a newer one. I like them both but once it get dirty and you lose the string it is really tough to start.

Fat Meter

Omron Body Logic Body Fat Analyzer HBF-306BL, I used this a while back and I guess since my body fat was to low that it had trouble giving me a reading. For the average person looking to see results and track weight and fat, this device seemed very accurate, others that were with me tried it and it seemed to be dead on. They say that it should be used with a scale if you would like to see the best results.

Video games to stay in shape

I had heard about his a couple years ago and now it's becoming a market. The idea is simple enough and when applied to a exercise routine, you start to see results. "How can this possibly work? How can you get a workout standing absolutely still?
Well, the kilowatt measures the force that you push and pull on the controller with, up to about 300 pounds worth." In home demo...

"Position 1: Stand in the doorway with your buns against one side of the frame and your hands on the other. Now push with all your might! While you're pushing, you should feel the effort in your triceps, deltoids, and abs.

Position 2: Hold onto the doorframe and pull with everything you've got. You should feel that in your biceps, lats and glutes.

Position 3: Brace your legs out wide, and push the doorframe left and then right. You should feel this in your quads, your core stabilizers, and your shoulders.

Now repeat the above exercises for 30 minutes, constantly changing between Positions 1, 2, and 3."

Now image a machine working against you, there you have it. POWERGRID Fitness

"No" Strap

I read this article in Sync a magazine dedicated to gadgets for men, not a great magazine but I was traveling and Outside was still last month. They had a article about mio watch that does not need a strap around the chest. After reading and if you are a serious athlete you will still feel at home with the strap. If you are just getting into reading and tracking your heart rate then this watch could be for you, base model starts at $99 so even if you don't like it then you have only invested a marginal amount of money. iUSE IT

Plugged into iBook
Well people who know me, knew that it was only a matter of time before I did this post. One of the best pieces of training equipment that I own is my iPod Shuffle, using the iPod is to big to use while you are doing any serious miles. The shuffle is light, small and easy to use, load it up and go. I have had mine for about 2 1/2 months and I use it while riding and running, you just forget that it is there. The interface with iTunes is great, plug it in load it up and hit play, it's really that easy, some people have complained that there is no screen, I keep saying if you loaded it up with 3+ hour of music you know what is on it, the controls are easy to use, skip, play pause, previous, how simple can that be. I have dropped it and gotten it wet (not soaked it) and it has never skipped. As for when it gets close to your heart rate monitor, that it causes some interference, but I have learned to keep it at my waist and it fixed the problem. www.apple.com

iSMART polar software for Mac's

Session Month Screen Shot
Good idea gone bad, I have tried to use this software a couple of times and find it very difficult, I also have to buy an adapter for the Polar IR-Serial Adaptor + USB-Serial Converter, so I have to go backwards after paying so much for one of the most advance laptops out on the market. It seems to me that it would be better just to have the companies selling the watches make Macintosh software, that is my thought. The Polar precision Software is great on the PC, I use it every day and I also use the online version polaroutdoorguide.com. Training for the masses and keeping a online diary seems to be a PC world and that's ok, stop trying and buy a cheap laptop that has IrDA and you will be more than happy.

Training Wheels

I can't wait for this. This new state of the art tricycle was designed by a team at Purdue University led by Scott Shim, an assistant professor of industrial design. It should be available by spring 2006, bike manufactures are very interested. After you read the article, I am sure you will say why was this not thought of sooner. Traditional training wheels make the kids dependent and never really learn to balance, when they are ready to take of the wheels, screaming and crying usually take place, this should help with that process. EyeToy for Fitness

It even has a name "exergaming" good for the kids that have grown up playing video games and need to get fit, it is actually a great way to teach martial arts. I have never gotten into video games, don't get me wrong I like to play them and used to go to the arcade mostly to play 'Pole Position" and other driving games. As the time for adults and kids gets harder to manage "exergaming" could catch on, cold winter mornings that you need to get your Kickboxing in turn on the gaming system and take on your next opponent, working up a sweat and learning the new moves. If they really get smart if your adversary does a move that you can't counter then there should be a button an instructor comes on shows you the move and counter move. There is some real potential, and fits into another idea I have but that is for another entry... CES in Las Vegas had a whole area geared towards "exergaming" and it seems to stay pretty busy. Potential I think so... EyeToy.

Bodybugg by Apex Fitness

I have always been lucky that I have never had to exercise to stay thin, quite the opposite I need to exercise to maintain my normal body weight. Apex fitness has a great product that helps with losing weight. Bodybugg™ by Apex fitness with technology developed by BodyMedia have come up with the world's most intelligent calorie management system, while traditional weight loss programs focus on tedious calorie counting, bodybugg™ is the only system on the market today that allows you to measure actual calories burned and consumed. I have not used or gotten my hands on this system yet but from what I have read it allows you to tailor the program based on your goals. Check it out.

This is one of the most dynamic web companies, MASSIVE, driving great solutions to the interested consumer. They really delivered a interested way for the general sailing ethicists to view the legendary Sydney to Hobart". Every ten minutes, a GPS-enabled satellite transceiver relays position reports from each competing yacht.”

Actively Mobile

Technology is changing the way that people do most anything. Now with chips becoming smaller and phones becoming lighter and compressed it's only a matter of time before it's the only device that people need as a MP3, organizer, calendar, phone and training log. People wear arm bands to carry their iPod.
If Actively Mobile can get a couple of issue fixed this would be great, I would use it, and it could fit into a couple of companies that I have talked about before. Polar has partnered with Nokia for Mobile Connectivity, again it is getting to a point that people feel safer taking a mobile phone while exercising.

Social GPS

Now this can be really cool as people catch up with phone technology, forget big brother, stop saying "How About Now", see where your friends are at by just looking at your phone. See where they in location to you if you are Mt. Biking, road biking, and the example that Rebecca has on her site skiing or snowboarding. Your kids can be located, without having to use Motorolas TalkAbout Radios. She has done this thesis on social gpsing. Check it out.... Rebecca Anema Social GPSing

inSENDtive

This is an idea that I had a while back and was not sure what to do with it, so I am wondering if anyone would like to develop this concept further. I am sure that we can work something out, JAY "My Pet Fat" this would be good for what you are doing...

inSENDtive
inSENDtive is a mobile phone service to assist a group of friends/gyms in meeting their personal goals. A user will choose the goals he wants to accomplish, such as regularly going to the gym, then select like-minded friends to join his support network. While at the gym he uses his camera phone to take a photo and send it to his friends to show that he reaches his goals. inSENDtive does not presume that a faceless service will be a powerful motivator; the service only connects and augments the existing motivational power of friendships.

For users, the real value of inSENDtive is as an automated and portable support for connecting friends to accomplish goals.

Using their mobile phone the user can upload a picture of themselves working out along with their results (heart rate and calories burned). A text message will send the picture and the stats to others in the group, giving inSENDtive to get to the gym and workout along with earning valuable HC points. His network on HC will show all the stats of the users in the group keeping a running total until their goals are accomplished.

Race Organizers (RFID tracking)

This is a great idea, the more that I see things like this out their I get really jazzed. I am going to do a Triathlon in June that is going to use this technology so I will give you first hand information.

ChampionChip
The world's leading timing technology for active sports events
In many sports events people compete, with one another, with themselves and with time. For active sports events the ChampionChip company has revolutionized timing. In 1994 the company introduced an automatic timing system, which can not only time the finish but also split and start times. This made net times for every individual athlete possible.

Technology in a Bottle

While reading my mountain bike magazine I can across this product called FRS® Plus antioxidant health drink they were giving a free sample away so I thought what the hey, so I went to the site www.frsplus.com and starting reading ”The company's current product portfolio includes FRS® Plus antioxidant health drink, a scientifically formulated supplement beverage designed to fight fatigue, boost performance and neutralize free radicals before they can cause cellular damage; and IntelliSoyTM, the first completely clear, 100% soluble and perfectly pure soy isoflavone ingredient with low calories and no taste.” IT IS GREAT….. I highly recommend that if you are training, try this out. For the cost of shipping or a Grande at Starbucks you can get a free 8 day trail bottle. What do you have to lose.

Linked running path

Path to fitness with sensors

Cities across Germany are being equipped with electronic jogging paths to beam runners' heart beats to a computer.

Joggers wearing a heart rate belt to send signals to solar-powered radio receivers, will have a "running account" at a computer in Munich, which will analyse their data over months or years.

"Good results" should win the runners discounts on health insurance premiums, which amount to a compulsory 14 per cent cut of salary.
