Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, Getting Noticed

Electronic shifting is coming, weight is down, problems are fixed, PRICE IS HIGH, but it coming. Tour de France riders are using it, yes pro riders are finding this a reliable solution. The riders to look out for on the new Di2 include Columbia-HTC's Michael Rogers and George Hincapie on their Scott Addicts for the road stages, while for the time trial stages the entire team will ride Di2 equipped Scott Plasma 3 time trial bikes.
It uses batteries and while they are the crutch, if you let the battery runout while ridding you better be prepared to ride home in that gear, NO way around that!
Best of all you have controls for TT and Triathlons, right to the aero bars and off you go, not to worry about hills the buttery shifting makes going up hills easy and smooth.

Parkour, Function Like a Robot in Nikes

The Runner -Exploit yourself- from BLR_VFX on Vimeo.

You have to sit back and think, (a) it would be great to be younger to learn all the new cool stuff, (b) that you won't get hurt doing all this cool new stuff, functioning like a robot would help both (a) and (b). This spot from Nike shows just how cool defying gravity can be, plus someone had to do the initial movements for someone to create it in 3D.
Hey be Free or at least where Nike Frees

Merida has introduced the TimeWarp!

New features to a standard TT bike. Having the ability to move the headset around depending on the event is remarkable, well Merida has done just that. The key is the Modular Head Tube System, allowing different setup and handle bars to be interchange without having to get another bike. Nice work.

iPhone 3Gs, can this be the end to watches!

Slowly creeping up on watches is the iPhone 3Gs. Along with the iBikePak and iMapMyRun+ MapMyRun.com you have a complete system. The only problem I see is the running, the iPhone is a bit big to be strapped to your arm. A chest or waist strap could be cool. Having a bike computer, watch, gps, shoe pod, etc. just seems wasteful. You might not think that this has changed the health arena, and Apple might not be the device for you but in a year from now most every phone will have some sort of app that will allow tracking.

RAGGEDedge Gear, can you say recycle!

Well there is nothing better than finding ways to recycle, RAGGEDedge Gear has done that for sails. no need to have all those sails sitting wasting away in your trailer or basement.
Many through them away or try to sell them to whom ever buys your boat, sometimes more often than not they are thrown away.
Their story.
We are a family company. RAGGEDedge started out as one of Susan's wild hairs; one more way for her to use her sewing & design skills for an exciting new project. We started to sail, and she started to make bags for us out of used sails. By request, and by word of mouth, RAGGEDedge gained a following of people who wanted unique, colorful, one-of-a-kind gear. That "project" has long since outgrown its closet space and has evolved into the company that exists here before you today.

We delight in our smallness. Design and quality outrank quantity. Small means that we happily produce limited edition runs of our gear and then move on to another idea we've got working. It means that our gear is fresh, always evolving. New designs, new colors, and new projects are the lifeblood that we thrive on.

Exact Altitude + GPS

Again the new iPhone is really going to change the way that we look at devices, do you need a GPS+Phone+Watch. Think again,
all that is left to do is buy attachments for the bike and the car. Well the attachment need to be waterproof! other than that this is a done deal. Exact Altitude + GPS + GPS is an altitude measurement tool, which can tell you the altitude of the ground of the current point you are. Exact Altitude uses an online service and also a built in database. You can see all the information from all sources, but there's a bigger display which shows you the most exact information. The order of them is: online information, database information, GPS information. Since the elevation database is quite big, there are more then one version of the application, usually split by some kind of natural splitting existing for continents. Because of this, please be aware which version do you download, since the offline data will work only on places which is listed. However, the online service will work anywhere you can get internet connection, however, except this no internet connection is required.

RealAge, Wii Fit, and Pharma Marketing

The next best thing to getting one to exercise outside is the Wii Fit. Lets face it some are just to embarrassed to exercise in public, self conscious or just don't have the money to join a gym. Playing online games allows many to be something else (leave it at that). The most important thing is that they are exercising and Wii has nailed it and now XBox Natal has taken it a bit further, tie it all into a online PHR/EHR and the results are expounded. Dose Of Digital is right on what I have been trying to get across for sometime, maybe it is starting to take hold.

Newton Running, Land, Lever, Lift

new colors and 3 years going strong. Newton is coming into it's own and really taking hold not only in the USAT but also in running, marathons as well. The shoes are light, well build, fast and best of all the patented Action/Reaction Technology™. When using the ultra-efficient Land-Lever-Lift midfoot or forefoot running gait, the technology absorbs and then returns your own energy back to you. It's not fancy technospeak, and it's no gimmick. It's a revolutionary way of building a running shoe based on Sir Isaac Newton's third law of motion – "For every ACTION, there is an equal and opposite REACTION." Loosely translated, it means you get a boost of forward energy with every single stride you take.
Wearing the shoes will get you noticed and for very good reason you will be going fast. The stand out, neon yellow, go fast red and orange are the best thought out marketing that one has seen in a while.
They also have the shoe test results to back it up.

ZIPP, Tangente Tubular Tires

They make some of the fastest wheels around ZIPP has now added tires to compliment their wheels.

"To cut through the wind, we've used our patented ABLC dimples to mitigate the "un-aero-ness" of a round shape at the wheel's leading edge. It took us 14 months and 2 trips to the wind tunnel to get it right, but the dimples will save you 1-3 watts, or up to 9 seconds over 40km. That's a big deal.
But the Tangente is not just a delicate special event tire. Thanks to our partnership with Vittoria, the Tangente sports a durable yet supple 290tpi casing. Because the dimpled pattern resists cracking so well, we're able to use an exclusive an extra-light rubber compound for low rolling resistance and high cornering grip in wet and dry conditions.
The Tangente's 21mm width optimizes aerodynamics, cornering ability, and durability. Average weight 282g, /- 15g. 38mm, overall length, approximately 34mm functional length. Includes tire pressure chart to optimize rolling resistance by rider weight and front/rear use."

With a wheel set why would you not buy the tire that matches or is at least designed for their wheels. Seems like a know brainer.

Tight & Right, Imperial BoardShorts

The fabric doesn't matter, its all in the draw string. Kids pant have this waistband that is adjustable so they can were bigger sizes without the pant falling down, not sure why this was abandoned but it seems as though Imperial Motion has solved this problem. No more showing crack, the draw sting looks like any normal draw string would look like on a boardshort except it goes all the way around your waist like when you were a kid. The only problem is the choices or styles to choose from, you can't win them all.

Ultrasounds with a Smart phone

As with all technology things get smaller and cooler. Like a smart phone that can take ultrasound pictures. Imagine emergency response with these type of gadgets, police officers who arrive first that the scene.
With the help of a USD$100,000 grant from Microsoft, Dr William Richard, associate professor of computer science and engineering at Washington University, and David Zar, research associate in computer science and engineering, have made USB ultrasound probes compatible with a smartphone. To accomplish this, the pair had to optimize the power consumption, data transfer rate as well as the image formation algorithms of the probe. With that achieved, it was possible to build smartphone-compatible USB ultrasound probes for imaging different areas of the body, such as the kidney, liver, bladder and eyes, as well as the prostate veins and arteries. more at gizmag.com

Swim Guard Vest

Yanko has some of the best ideas around. Swim Guard Vest is a vest that is worn like a Chest Harness with a bit more support around the neck, keeping your head afloat. The device is form fitting and I could see this being built into wetsuits in the near future. The really cool feature is the GPS that is built in. I can see Triathlons offering this as an options to those a little hesitant of the water, like theNew York City Triathlon, the Hudson can be scary.

Map Out Cycle Routes In Advance!

Sometimes all it takes is techno, gadget guy to get into exercise and WHAM you have another cool device.
Here is an explanation from Yanko Design
The neat gadget clamps up to the handle bar and includes audio as well as visual guide. You simply need to hook up the device to your comp and download the desired route from an online map. Turn by turn, the VeloCity rattles of the directions and simultaneously displays the map on the screen. Of course GPS and Bluetooth come into play as well.

Chrome, the next Timbiktu (maybe)

Looking out for functional stuff is hard Timbuktu makes some of the best bags, they used to be part of the USAT Membership. That being said you just can't wear their bags out. However it seems like there is a new player in the works, ok maybe not new but up and coming CHROME, Chrome was founded in Boulder, CO by a couple of guys who needed a bag that lasted forever. They began sewing in their garage using the toughest material they could find. A company came out of that with a philosophy of building stuff that would function well in tough conditions and would last a lifetime.

Eight years later we moved our operations to San Francisco. Today, our production has outgrown the garage and we make our products all over the world. We remain committed to using the best materials, hardware and design to bring products to our customers that they can count on.

There's not a lot of nonsense in our gear, just materials and construction that serve a purpose and last a lifetime. We stand behind everything we make.

Now they make much more then just bags (don't they all), their Light Weight Shins Slate

  • Made of 4-way Tweeve™ Durastretch™ fabric, a durable, breathable fabric, that retains its shape and is also water-repellant
  • Cut high in back and low in front
  • Keeper pockets
  • Lightly padded chamois seat and inseam
  • Reinforced hem
  • Zipper and secured cargos
  • Articulated knees
  • Got to like when companies see a need and address it.

The coldblack® finishing only contains „bluesign® approved“ components. „bluesign® approved“ components are as low as possible in harmful substances, making them benign to mankind and the environment and encouraging the economical and ecological use of resources in the production process.

Cars have horns, Bikes should too! Airzound

Not sure why more bicyclist have not mounted or used air horns to keep them save, like cars, but with Airzound they could change that. All of us have close calls, yelled, screamed #$*&#@ at motorist. Airzound is trying to change that and also claims it is the worlds loudest bike horn at 115 db.

On the decibel scale, the smallest audible sound (near total silence) is 0 dB. A sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful than near total silence is 20 dB. A sound 1,000 times more powerful than near total silence is 30 dB. Here are some common sounds and their decibel ratings:

Near total silence - 0 dB
    A whisper - 15 dB
    Normal conversation - 60 dB
    A lawnmower - 90 dB
    A car horn - 110 dB
A rock concert or a jet engine - 120 dB
    A gunshot or firecracker - 140 dB

So by How Stuff Works the Airzound is just above a car horn, so people should take notice since it will be a little louder and different.

Really the horn should have someone screaming as though they are getting run over that would really jolt drivers to be more aware.

    POC, Ski Boots For Comfort!

Season is coming to an end, so what better time to buy new boots. The POC seems to eliminate the need to crank down on buckles, you have laces very similar to snowboarders boots. Not sure why this has not be thought of yet and this is just a concept but lets get real. I know snowboarding is relatively new and when it started wearing a good ld pair of Sorels would do the trick. The POC Tarsus boots eschews buckles for laces connected to a tension wheel you dial in for the perfect fit.

    Marine Life Protection Act

TheSurfrider Foundation is currently working with a wide variety of individuals and organizations on the Marine Life Protection Act –or MLPA. The MLPA is a state law that requires establishing a “network” of marine protected areas along the California coastline. This law is currently being implemented in Southern California.

The Clean Water initiative is primarily focused on protecting water quality in coastal watersheds and in the near-shore marine environment. Consequently, the Surfrider Foundation advocates for strong water quality regulations, adequate marine recreational water quality monitoring, reporting and posting, reduction of polluted discharges into the ocean and education regarding personal responsibility for the reduction water pollution. We also support smart land use planning to ensure that coastal environmental resources are protected and healthy watersheds are maintained.

    Light Lane - Concept

    From Altitude

Can you imagine, this is great.

A close brush with a distracted driver is enough to intimidate the most avid bikers from riding at night. The problem isn’t just about visibility, as safety lights are effective at capturing the attention of a driver. However, these lights are typically constrained to the bike frame, which highlights only a fraction of the bike’s envelope. Bike lanes have proven to be an effective method of protecting cyclists on congested roads. One key is that the lane establishes a well defined boundary beyond the envelope of the bicycle, providing a greater margin of safety between the car and the cyclist. Yet, only a small fraction of streets have dedicated bike lanes, and with an installation cost of $5,000 to $50,000 per mile, we shouldn’t expect to find them everywhere anytime soon. Instead of adapting cycling to established bike lanes, the bike lane should adapt to the cyclists. This is the idea behind the LightLane. Our system projects a crisply defined virtual bike lane onto pavement, using a laser, providing the driver with a familiar boundary to avoid. With a wider margin of safety, bikers will regain their confidence to ride at night, making the bike a more viable commuting alternative.

Train like a PRO, NIKE football

Anything that changes the way that one trains is a good thing, anyway that companies like Nike can do that is even better. Nike has invested billions in football players, shoes, equipment and has some of the best coaches working for them as well. When a individual and log on to there system pick a training plan that a Pro or College athlete might use is invaluable. Almost takes the trainer out of the equation. Within minutes you can have a training plan that will build you into some sort of animal on the plaining field, or at least the office. A series bonus is that you can download to your calendar, outlook, iCal or Google, the one thing that all programs need to start to think about is being able to read the local weather and import that into your training log, now that would up the anti.

GameRunner, Something to do while on the treadmill!

It is that time of year CES is running and cool gadgets are a plenty. The health and fitness market always has demo's at CES. So it's no surprise that GameRunner has developed a better way to be in the game (virtually of course), first person and able to run/walk/sprint after your opponent. This changes how one react to being in a war situation, instead of thinking you are king of the world from your couch. Running after your target is the real first person, with out getting killed, you can really see who can outlast one another, you have to rest so hiding or ducking and cover comes into play.
    What FPGameRunner is saying:
using exercise and video gaming into one exhilerating and healthy experience for game enthusiasts, the GameRunner is a revolution in medical science and electronic entertainment. The activity of playing a video game generally leaves players physically inactive for prolonged periods of time. The GameRunner solves this problem by allowing players to use their body to play games instead of having the player sit and use only their hands. Naturally this makes playing games on the GameRunner beneficial to your heath by burning calories and keeping your heart rate up.
    Now go play.

    SKIGYM - A New Twist

Love the new twist, first you had a machine that was curved and allowed you to go side to side simulating skiing. Now with SKIGYM you can actually see yourself going down the mountain. This is very similar to the CompuTrainer, you need a PC and a flat screen, the kit includes 32 race courses from 18 real-world mountain. Cost roughly $2300, might be a tough sell in today's economy but you never know, hey at least the pictures look cool. Maybe this replaces the ski vacation, at least your feet won't freeze.

Bike Sales Drop, Gas Prices Drop

It can't be, the gas companies have lowered prices back to the 1980 and bike sales have dropped. Yes it is winter, so we won't know what the real market is going to look like until the spring but come on, keep biking, you never know prices could fall further. To be fair to both sides it does get silly when a tri bike cost as much as a Nissan Versa makes it hard not to buy one, or when a dealership down south is giving away a free car with the purchase of a Dodge Ram. Technology is great but lets get real getting outside for any amount of time per day is one of the best gifts that you can give yourself. So spend the extra money and get a bike that is going to last, hey bikes outlast cars by a long shot.
    Cheer and Happy New Year.
